Jay Peak represents New England skiing at its finest. The infamous Jay Cloud sits atop Jay Peak and dumps round after round of some of the best snow in New England. Because of this Jay can keep its tree skiing steep and tight. Making the drive to Jay will only benefit those who live for the trees. The main trails are definitely decent but don’t stand above other mountains in the NE. For tree skiing, Jay peak has few rivals (Stratton eh, Burke Mountain yes, Mad River Glen ( skiers only). When visiting Jay I recommend doing 3 things.

Jay activity 1: Revel in the Quebec vs. America conflict. Complain about Canadian’s fussy ways while they mock you in their native tongue. (Seriously everyone gets along, the place feels like little Quebec). Being just 4 miles from the Canadian Border means that there's a strong influence from our friendly neighbors to the north.

Jay activity 2: Stay at Grandpa Grunts Lodge. This former brothe' is now a glorified hostel with a feel that crosses between a college dorm and a wild west brothel. The downstairs common room still maintains the original decor from the inns racier days. I walked in the first time to find a group of college kids who had previously been lost for days in the Jay Peak backcountry. The free wheeling attitude of the place is refreshing, and while the mood is upbeat, festivities end early to allow for first tracks.

Jay activity 3: Big Mountain Sledding. The Jay inn allows guests to sled down the ski trails immediately uphill from the inn. The sleds are provided for free, just ask at the front desk. I suggest hiking up about 4 chairlift poles, praying and then hurtling down. Important to note that any attempts at stopping or steering the plastic sleds will cause a rooster tail of snow and ice to shoot up into your face. I would recommend doing this activity sober.

Snowfall: The summit is at an elevation of 3,858 feet (1,176 m), with a 2,015 foot (656 m) vertical drop. Jay Peak enjoys the largest average annual snowfall (355 inches or 9 metres) of any ski area in Eastern North America, including Mount Washington (which averages 645 cm / 253.9 inches annually on the summit). In 2007-8, the resort reported 419 inches (1,064 cm) of snowfall. *

Trails: Well-known for its off-piste skiing, Jay Peak Resort offers 24 tree-skiing areas, or Glades, covering approximately 100 acres, which have been trimmed of small vegetation to provide enjoyable off-piste skiing. For every six glades that the resort "thins or trims" only one appears on the trailmap. Jay has 76 trails, covering 385 acres (155 ha) of skiable terrain.*
