'Real Life' is what you do before you grow up.
Four years ago I sat riding shotgun through the cornfields of Central, PA. My buddy Chet and I were on the way to Mt. Gretna, a remote outcropping of high quality Diabase rock that was virtually unknown just a few years ago. Chet was and is instrumental in developing Mt. Gretna and many of the surrounding climbing areas near his hometown of Lancaster, PA. Through the car window, the sun glistened on the corn still standing as fall winds whistled through the rolling fields. This was prime climbing weather and a welcome escape from the pressure of academic life. I declared that I wished I could climb every day and avoid the "real" life that seemed to beckon from the other end of school. "You can" Chet affirmed, glancing over at me kindly, sympathetic to the illusion I had for 20+ years constructed. My kneejerk reaction was to retort with one of the many reasons why I could never live such a spontaneious, care free exhistence. Yet, in the car on that day no words came, no reason why I was doomed to sit and experience splendid days through the windows of a high rise office.
As I sit and fritter away a beautiful day, my back turned to the window of a high rise office, I can say hanging out with Chet was the most formative experience of my early 20's. I wont forget the simplicity of living with the weather, and as I move 'forward', I am thankful that my perception was forever widened, and that I can still remember what its like to be free.
For many of us the outdoors are a culture unto themselves, a way to reset the stresses and expectations of daily life. For me, the outdoors are a way to surround myself with an abundance that is greater than any worldly possession, and implicit in that are the friendships formed among the boulders. These friendships brought about greater understanding of the breadth of life, from tales of Navy Seal training to sailing trips around the world, the stories told by outdoors people are some of the best in the world. Underlying it all is a focus on personal fulfillment and living simply. I learned a tremendous amount from many people during the start of my climbing life and I hope this education continues and spills over into all the areas of my interest. This website is an experiment to replicate a true outdoor community online, to share information digitally, and to empower people to reach new heights and help others do the same. I highly suggest you check out www.Chetroy.com it is a fantastic example of a community of climbers (the Creative Climber's Coalition) banding together to keep in touch and stay psyched.
